FDA Recommends Genetic Testing for Patients of Asian Ancestry Who Take Carbamazepine
On December 12, 2007, the FDA issued a recommendation to test patients with an Asian ancestry for a specific gene variant before starting the medication carbamazepine. Studies demonstrate a strong association between serious skin reactions and an inherited variant of a gene (HLA-B* 1502), which occurs almost exclusively in people of Asian ancestry.
