Steroids in Baseball
The long-awaited Mitchell report was released yesterday. The report indicates that the use of steroids was pervasive, with over 90 baseball players implicated in the report. If you are interested in the 409 page report, you can read it online...

Unfortunate that these folks are our kids' heroes.
We had a grand rounds on athletes and performance enhancers. Parents AND coaches of young athletes need to deliver the message that it's ok to lose and that doing your best is the most important thing. Just telling athletes the risks of steroids does not work when they are pressured (most of their lives) to have the drive to win and be the number one. Psychiatry can play a role in these athletes especially at the professional level. A lot of these athletes suffer from depression after a lost and resort to self medication themselves, whether it is steroids (if they haven't taken them already) or other illicit drugs.
