Can You Chat and Drive at the Same Time?
A recent study by a psychologist at the University of South Carolina demonstrates why drivers have more difficulty paying attention to someone while talking on a cell phone. The study found that the tasks of planning to speak and speaking tax the brain more readily than does simply listening. The hypothesis is that one forms a visual image of the other person while speaking and that this distracts from the task at hand, i.e. driving.
