The Source of Adventure?
A recent study at the University College London used imaging to determine the location of the center of the brain which allows us to take chances. Using fMRI scanners, researchers showed that the region of the brain that lights up in these cases is the ventral striatum. It is believed that making a new choice that is beneficial results in the release of dopamine, reinforcing the behavior. This is similar to the novelty-seeking involved in drug addiction and gambling. Read an article describing the study.
