The Prudent Reader Test?

The New England Journal of Medicine discusses the pitfalls of health care media coverage in this weeks's issue. The author, a journalist, suggests "a prudent reader" test to identify holes in the journalism.

Media uses quick titles and catchy phrases to entice readers. Often, the need to entertain overrides the responsibility of providing even-handed coverage of news. Often, interpreting new studies is difficult and may have several nuances, which are difficult even for physicians to understand.

Let's hope that 2009 brings more balanced coverage of health care issues. Happy New Year!
